Mercy Medical Center’s Nutrition Services is a multifaceted department which is not only responsive to clients within the hospital but more broadly responsive to the community as a whole.
While hospitalized at MMC, our food service team responds to your inpatient needs for wholesome, nutritious food directed not only to meeting your special dietary requirements and encourage healing/wellness but also attempts to meet your food preferences.
Clinical nutrition staff include Registered Dietitians (RD) and Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) who are available to provide education to you and your family whether inpatient or outpatient.
Overview of out patient services available
The clinical nutrition staff is available on a fee-for-service basis to assist in menu analysis and approval for assisted living, retirement centers or other facilities requiring assistance.
Nutritional counseling services or medical nutrition therapy as well as diabetes education through the Mercy Medical Center Diabetes Education Program (see below) is available on a fee-for-service basis through our outpatient department. Group and individual sessions are available; both require a written referral from your primary care physician. Have your physician complete the attached referral form, fax to us and we will contact you to establish a counseling appointment.
Many health insurance companies have a diabetes education benefit, check with your insurance company to determine what is covered. Medicare has authorized coverage for medical nutrition therapy for both diabetes and renal disease.
Mercy Medical Center Diabetes Education Program
Plan to receive diabetes education with staff from the Mercy Medical Center Diabetes Education Program, which is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for meeting the National Standard for Diabetes Self-management Education.
Receive personalized diabetes self-management education on all areas of diabetes care; learn how to take care of yourself while taking care of the diabetes.
Educators include Registered Dietitians, Registered Nurses and Certified Diabetes Educators who are there to assure you have the tools necessary to manage your disease. Learn how to plan meals and snacks, test/interpret blood glucose data, plan physical activity, take medication correctly, start/continue insulin use, prevent long-term complications, care for your feet, reduce short-term complications such as low blood sugar, and manage diabetes during pregnancy and more.
